It’s a strange relationship.

Oppo was originally created by Jalopnik commenters (2005? 2006?) as an Off- Topic Jalopnik-based sub forum where any subject is not off topic. It still remains that to this day.

It used to have a jalopnik URL, but when Nick Denton had a scandal on his hands where one Gawker writer from one of the Gawker sites (Gizmodo maybe?) shared a plagiarized article from one of their sub-forums, he decided to cut the link from each Gawker site to their sub forums by changing the domains to KINJA of all the Gawker sub forums: Gizmodo, io9, kotaku, gawker, deadspin, jezebel, jalopnik, etc

Just recently, Denton has come down on his editors for sharing too much “outside content” from these Kinjas, but it’s not clear right now what exactly that means.

That’s probably a bit more than you wanted to know.

Interesting - I didn’t know about the “outside content” thing. I did notice they’ve been sharing less from Oppo lately, but they certainly haven’t stopped, either.

They went for a week sharing nothing - and surprise, the FP was light on content. They’ve been sharing more lately. They’re also down on the total number of writers from where they were a year ago, which is why they’re hiring.
